Advancing Neurodiverse Inclusion: Andy Speaks’ Impactful Initiatives
Making a Difference in Neurodiverse Inclusion
In February 2019, Andy Speaks embarked on a journey to transform the lives of individuals with Neurodevelopmental Disorders. With an unwavering commitment to inclusion and awareness, the organization has left an indelible mark on society. Let’s explore the incredible initiatives and accomplishments that have defined Andy Speaks’ mission.
Shining at the Rotary Sunshine Rally
Andy Speaks played a pivotal role in planning the 40th Rotary Sunshine Rally, an annual event that unites mentally and physically challenged children for a day of fun at the Jamuhuri show grounds. Leading the PR docket, Andy Speaks raised awareness through mainstream media channels, reaching television, radio, and print. This extraordinary event brought together over 6,500 differently-abled children, leaving a lasting impact on their lives.
Online Awareness Campaigns
In March, Andy Speaks launched extensive online campaigns focused on Down Syndrome and Cerebral Palsy. To further its mission, the organization introduced the Special Needs Info-Hub, a portal offering valuable information on four common Neurodevelopmental Disorders. This hub serves as a valuable resource for parents, guiding them towards informed decisions while also raising public awareness about these often misunderstood conditions.
Cycling for Autism Awareness
April marked World Autism Awareness Month, and Andy Speaks introduced the Cycle for Autism project, a national level initiative. James Getangah, a founder partner at Andy Speaks and the Dazzling Centre for Autism, cycled an impressive 1000 kilometers from Nairobi County to Kisii County. This epic journey spread autism awareness across 15 counties and reached approximately 10,000 people. The most significant achievement was the endorsement and support of county officials, leading to the initiation of policies aimed at improving education and healthcare infrastructure for individuals with autism.
Media Engagement
The Cycle for Autism awareness campaign garnered extensive media coverage, including TV, radio, and print. Andy Speaks leveraged this opportunity to discuss the autism spectrum and Neurodevelopmental disabilities in depth. The engagement of key figures such as the CEO of the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Hon. Mohammed Gabbow, Hon. Tim Wanyonyi, MP Westlands & Chair of the Kenya Disability Parliamentary Association, and the 1st Lady of Kisii County, Madame E. Ongwae, led to discussions about implementing policies that would benefit individuals with Neurodevelopmental Disabilities.
Public Education on Autism
Andy Speaks took April, designated as World Autism Awareness Month, as an opportunity to educate the public. They organized informative sessions in various media outlets, ensuring that the message reached a broad audience. The organization conducted radio interviews in five different languages with Special Needs Professionals, discussing Autism. On TV, they delved into topics like special needs education and the use of assistive technology to teach autistic children. These efforts extended to social media platforms and stories shared online.
Encouraging Partnerships
The successful awareness campaign attracted partnerships and support from various organizations. Maktaba Mashinani, an NGO equipping libraries, supplied books to the Dazzling Centre for Autism in Kisii and the Margaret Okari School. These contributions furthered the cause of providing resources and support to individuals with Neurodevelopmental Disorders.
Empowering through Vocational Training
Andy Speaks partnered with Haven Cottage to host vocational training sessions for Neurodiverse children and youth. These sessions covered a range of skills, including computers, art, music, woodwork, crockery, leatherwork, and beadwork. The goal was to identify and nurture their innate talents, making them more employable and self-reliant.
Neurodiversity Awareness through Sign Language
In collaboration with Signs TV, Andy Speaks launched “NEURODIGEST,” an informative program hosted by founder Ms. Sylvia M. Mochabo. The show focuses on Neurodiversity awareness and shares untold stories using sign language, ensuring that even individuals with hearing impairments are educated.
Spreading the Message Globally
Andy Speaks didn’t limit its reach to Kenya. They shed light on autism in the Eldorado Park community in Johannesburg, South Africa. Their founder was interviewed on Eldos FM, and a parent from the community personally commended their awareness efforts and sought guidance.
Engaging with Rotary and Education
The organization actively participated in various Rotary clubs, Rotaract clubs, and the United States International University (USIU). They used these platforms to educate members about Autism and other Neurodevelopmental Disabilities.
Equipping Caregivers and Parents
In June, Andy Speaks partnered with the Emergency Medicine Kenya Foundation and Dynamic Occupation Therapy to hold workshops. These workshops equipped caregivers with the skills needed to handle emergencies and provide occupational therapy at home. Additionally, a training workshop empowered parents and individuals with disabilities with business organization, scaling up, and marketing skills at the Disability Empowerment Capability & Sustainability (DECAS) offices in Machakos County.
Influencing Policy Change
As part of their commitment to influence policy change for Neurodiverse inclusion, Andy Speaks engaged with key officials from the Ministry of Health, the Director of Special Needs Education in the Ministry of Education, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour & Social Security, and the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD). The discussions revolved around proposing policy amendments to ensure that no one is left behind in the Universal Health Care initiative.
Breaking Down Walls
Andy Speaks participated in the #BomoaUkuta video challenge by the German Embassy, highlighting the stigma faced by individuals with Neurodevelopmental disabilities. Their efforts earned them a place among the top ten winners, emphasizing the need to break down societal walls for a more inclusive community.
Stakeholder Roundtable Forum
A significant milestone was the first-ever townhall stakeholders’ roundtable forum, which took place on 28th November 2019 at the Aspire Centre. Key stakeholders from the Government, public and private sectors, parents, and caregivers came together to discuss matters affecting the Neurodiverse community. This panel, moderated by Andy Speaks’ founder, featured representatives from UNICEF, KISE, the Ministry of Education, NCPWD, and Sense International. The event drew over 100 parents, caregivers, and organizations, contributing to a more inclusive society.
UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities
To mark the UN International Day of Persons with Disabilities in 2019, Andy Speaks engaged in various media interviews, including appearances on Citizen TV and KTN News. These interviews furthered the organization’s mission of raising awareness and advocating for Neurodiverse inclusion.
Andy Speaks’ relentless dedication and impactful initiatives have created a profound impact on Neurodiverse inclusion and awareness.
