• Many people do not understand what Autism Spectrum disorder is and relate it to witchcraft and mental retardation in our African society and more awareness is needed
• From our Cycle for awareness event in 2019 across 16 counties, we noted only 30% of nurses knew about Autism
• Special children have a hard time playing because of the segregation & discrimination faced in• While the world diagnosis is done at 2–3 years, Africa is at 5–7 years
• Missed & misdiagnosis has led to delayed intervention that would save a child’s development progress and improved
• We have had cases of non-verbal children being operated on
from assumption, they are deaf & others clustered as dumb Education support
• Most government special units lack the education materials & supplementary assistive devices for neurodivergent students
• Many people do not understand what Autism Spectrum disorder is and relate it to witchcraft and mental retardation in our African society and more awareness is needed

• The Student teacher ratio is also overstretched compared
to international recommended ratio of 2:5

• The much-needed therapy to supplement class work that help
s in ADL Sensory motor skills is not accessible to many parents
• We do not have well-equipped / affordable / accessible Occupation Therapy centers
• High cost of raising a special child makes parents overlook care like general check-ups, dental, and vision checks Mental Health
• We have had suicide cases as caregivers get no time to rest or care for themselves. Every service is always a tedious
and costly process on top of stigma from the community Access to Justice
• Defilement cases of special needs children are rampant and due to the challenges in communication plus stigma they end
up not getting justice or the youth being accused of things they have not done Eloping, non-verbal characteristics for youth have them misjudged and blamed for other people’s wrong doings.
• No alternative means of communication when one is non-verbal.
